I took a vacation from Dewey and visited Alex Grey

If no one knows by now, I have left the annals’s of the south and moved to the north. I am now a Technical Services Librarian at one of the SUNY campuses in New York State. I have been up here for 3 weeks now and it has been a cross between Hell and Heaven. Just for the record, (all) of my colleagues whom I work with are Heaven. Work is frustrating, but challenging which makes William a happy librarian. So, work is not my issue in terms of my reference to the sulfur smelled after life.

It has been a bit of a rough ride in terms of finding a place to stay. Then again, I have never made such a spur of the moment decision in my life. Even the librarians here were surprised how fast I removed up here. In a word, It has been an F!@## adventure!

As such, I initially stayed with some librarians who are practicing Buddhist for my first few days.  The librarians up here have been extremely helpful. Again, work has been the source of a lot of my stress and yet fulfilling at the same time.

The countryside is freaking beautiful!! I almost hit somebody because I was looking at this mini waterfall and not paying attention to the road. Found an indie coffee shop/ coffee company that serves all my needs.

And then there is Alex Grey.

Alex Grey (born November 29, 1953) is an American artist specializing in spiritual and psychedelic art (or visionary art) that is sometimes associated with the New Age movement.

To try and get a hold of my sanity and relax, I stopped thinking about life (work, family, bills) and decided to meet an old friend who drove up to Wappinger, Ny just to meet Alex Grey and his wife.

Here name is Kat.

I have known her for over 7 years now. Now one of my friends, Angie, told me that I had not gone on much of an adventure in New York. Which , I must admit, is true.

As such, when I met Kat at the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors, an art installation and  a non-profit church supporting Visionary Culture in Wappinger, New York, I just let things go.  I had never heard of Alex Grey however, on this particular day, they had a musical group visit the campus. The drummer was an under study of Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk. His group, Room of Voices, is composed of himself (percussion/drums/vocals) Karissa Gallo (synths/vocals). I guess I should have taken a photo of me with him. I was more interested in their music.

Anyway, I spent the day touring the Grey’s grounds and snapped a few photos of some of his art work. I was gonna go in to a complete narrative about each photo. However, I am tired and I have work tomorrow. So, I will let the pictures speak for themselves.

(Beware of Wikipedia’s accuracy. I know some reference librarian is hoping to use this blog post as a way to pic on Wikipedia or impress some class about what sources not to use. Stop preaching to the choir)
